What is a Transition Town?
- All of NZ
Transition Town initiatives are bringing people together out of a desire to explore how we - and
our communities - can respond to the twin challenges of climate change and peak oil. We know we don’t have all the answers but we believe we have the innovation to create those solutions. Each transition group networks with their local community on a coordinated range of projects designed
to transition from high energy to low energy lifestyles in a positive and creative manner. Our aim is to re-localise our communities, making them vibrant, resilient and truly sustainable.
Key Concepts
Humanity used immense amounts of creativity, ingenuity and adaptability on the way as we ascended the energy up-slope - there's no reason for us not to do the same on the down-slope. There are four key assumptions that serve as a foundation for Transition Towns. The conclusion is that if we collectively plan and act early enough, there's every likelihood that we can create a way of living that's significantly more connected, more vibrant and more in touch with our environment than the oil-addicted treadmill we find ourselves on today.
Transition Towns in New Zealand/Aotearoa
A substantial number of towns are working on peak oil and climate change education, and localisation initiatives in New Zealand. It seems likely that in the near future many of these towns will formally adopt the Transition Towns model.
We are using a social network site for connecting with others in the Transition Town movement. On that site you will find videos, photos, events notices, a number of special interest groups, and some lively discussion.
