Impending Global Food Crisis ?
Numerous world agencies and authorities are predicting the increasing inability of people (in both underprivileged and developed countries) to be able to afford food is not a short term phenomenon but rather one that should alarm us. The World Bank has already set aside substantial funds to assist the Philipines and other countries in a similar plight.
Over the past year we have observed a similar trend in New Zealand. The increases here are not simply due to a single factor but are rather due to a combination of natural phenomena and manmade market forces. Certainly fuel fluctuations and weather patterns have had a profound effect but we are also at the mercy of numerous other influences.
While a single example does not properly reflect a trend, the link below will take you to an insightful video clip of the operator of an urban food bank in the USA. Her observations are most illuminating. The interview is courtesy of Newsweek and is preceded by a 15 second commercial advertisement (sorry).
