So Many issues- So few solutions!
Even though solutions need to be found for New Zealand-Aotearoa to re-engineer an economy which can function well in a new concept of biological enviroment, i.e. Percieved climate-change, carbon footprints etc, such an economy cannot be grown in a national enviroment of social chaos and crime.
Social welfare is not a government department, but a concept of caring for the populace as a whole, in which we once, as a country led the world.
Kiwis, regardless of ethnic background, are strongly individualistic, while respecting that traffic policing is a job which needs doing, the Kiwi has always viewed traffic officers in a 'them versus us' perspective, while the police 'proper' were universally respected for their dedication to fighting crime and their wilingness to help the public in any situation. Terrible damage was done to the relationship between the police and the public with the combining of the police and traffic ministries in 1992. The hybrid-police have never recovered from that political bungle.
Alternative motor energy, such as electric vehicles cannot happen overnight and the reality is that the internal-combustion engine will be with us for decades yet. We must get greener with our fuels but realisticly unless we develop alternative, sustainable bio-fuel production within our own country, rocketing crude-oil prices will inflate our economy to third-world status very quickly. We need to keep our bio-fuel production as being strictly state-owned.
My vote will go to politicians who will re-establish and correctly resource the Police and Traffic departments seperately. Who will make home-grown bio-fuel (possibly pine-needle based) production internally in this country, a high priority, AND while being considerate of our country's carbon footprint, will not use it almost as 'an act of contrition' against our economy and our people.

Unfortunately, while the basis for The Green Party is good, i.e. protection of the enviroment etc, they were too reserved in their opposition to GM and there was a lot of tokenism regarding 'Corngate' etc.
The enacting of the 'anti-smacking' legislation has left parents with no overall control of their children, as all other forms of discipline , time-out, curfews etc, require the cooperation of the child. For example you cannot enforce an edict that a child goes to it's room for time-out, if the child
simply refuses to oblige...You cannot use force to put them there, nor can you threaten a smack for disobedience.
On the other hand, setting aside funding scandal for New Zealand First, they can point to many beneficial changes they have 'forced' on government, especially as far as young children and pensioners are concerned. For example, Gold Card
benefits, cheaper doctors visits for the under fives etc.
As far as 'walking the talk' is concerned, The Green Party can point to little of actual benefit to the people. They talk of honesty, integrity etc, but can the name the changes they have wrought which are of proven benefit to our society here in NZ?
Of course, what is needed in a new government is:
HONESTY, INTEGRITY, JUSTICE, COMPASSION, HUMILITY, DILIGENCE to name but a few qualities...
...have you noticed any particular party offering these on their manifesto? Seriously, why on earth should we put up with anything less?
"HONESTY, INTEGRITY, JUSTICE, COMPASSION, HUMILITY, DILIGENCE to name but a few qualities...
...have you noticed any particular party offering these on their manifesto? "
Yes, I have. And I am standing for them as the candidate for Tukituki. http://greenhawkesbay.wordpress.com and http://www.greens.org.nz
The Green Party does not play personality politics, is upfront with all policy in detail on our website, policy is formed with the involvement of all members who wish to engage, and our philosophical basis is on environmental sustainability and social justice and compassion.
So, I invite you to support the Greens this election.
It is interesting to observe that you say that 'Social welfare is not a government department' - not more than about 25 years ago it was! Does that speak volumes or what !
That notwithstanding I do believe you have a valid perspective on how our Police are now generally viewed. BUT, denthepen, it may well now be too late to reverse the corrosive effects of that particular 'social cancer' - just look around you and relate what you observe to the symptoms exhibited by earlier civilisations, each and every one, shortly before their collapse and fall from global prominence.
"Social Welfare" was still a government department around 10 years ago. During period 1998 - 1999 the Department of Social Welfare and the Labour Department were combined to form Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ). One of the last gasps of the Government of the time.

Google 'Turpentine' and you will see that fuel-technology could turn our massive pine-forests into a nationally beneficial fuel production resource, as long as the politicians don't sell the idea and production off shore.
