Wrap up warm and enjoy the brisk weather. Unfortunately we still haven’t had much rain. It is still dry at the bottom of the hole if planting a new season rose or a shrub, so you must give them a good soaking after planting.
New season roses are in the garden centre now, so come and have a look as numbers are limited. We have plenty standard Icebergs, as it is still the most planted variety.
If you are replacing a rose you have removed because it didn’t do well, you must replace the soil with new compost or potting mix, as that soil could well be hosting fungi and bacteria that caused the problem.
No garden is complete until it has a Daphne. The beautiful sweet perfume they produce in late winter, when the garden is just starting to come alive after its winter sleep. They like a cool position, as they don’t like the heat or to dry out.
Christmas lilies benefit from dividing every 3 years. If yours are not flowering like they used to, they maybe overcrowded.
Garlic will grow, even in these cold June soils. Set out shallots now.
Cut down asparagus fern and cultivate the bed. Apply a mulch of compost.
Be careful not to walk on bare soil as this can destroy its structure when quite wet.
Don’t be tempted to prune your roses till late July or August. The hard frosts we are getting will damage the wood that is exposed after pruning, causing die back and blind shoots.
Read books and dream of all the changes you are going to make to your piece of paradise , when the weather begins to warm up in a couple of months.
