Investors devastated
Warren Pickett
Devastated investors of the two failed companies, Waipawa Holdings Ltd and Waipawa Finance Company Ltd, filed quietly and solemn faced into the Civic Theatre, Waipukurau last Friday afternoon, to attend a creditors meeting with appointed liquidators John Palairet and Graham Edwards of BDO Spicers Hawke's Bay.
The information given to these creditors, which includes church trusts, children's trusts, sports clubs and farmers, makes for grim reading.
Waipukurau Jockey Training Centre
Waipukurau Jockey Training Centre has been humming with our four regular local trainers all finding form. They are doing and have been doing well throughout the 2007/2008 season, which ended on August 1.
Altogether, local trainers have had 11 wins this year.
Kelly Burne, who was second in the leading trainers for Hawke's Bay, has had seven wins and numerous placings throughout the season.
Her horses My Astron, Riba Rocket, Turnonthelight, Nothinglikeelsie and Khasini were all winners last season. On Monday, August 4, she again succeeded in winning, with a promising filly called Secret Mission.
On Saturday, July 26, Kirsty Lawrence has a convincing win with her horse Just Once More. Kirsty and her husband Steve have a racing share in the horse with Trevor and Debbie Walters, owners of New World, Waipukurau.
Kirsty had taken her horse to Te Rapa; a long way from home, but it is certainly well worth the travel when one scores a win.
Telecom mayhem in Central Hawke's Bay
Wearable Trash
The loss of telephones and eftpos for up to a week from Wednesday, August 6 ,was variously described as 'a real hassle', 'a nightmare', 'very inconvenient' and 'pretty stressful'.
The lack of telecommunications was not the only problem: all the affected businesses condemned the lack of information and cooperation from Telecom.
Only one business received a call from Telecom advising that services had been restored.
They coped in different ways, but all believe they lost business because of the problem.
Pregnancy Help celebrates 30yrs
Pregnancy Help CHB Inc celebrated 30 years of existence last Tuesday, with a luncheon held at the Farriers Arms, Waipukurau.
The small group of dedicated volunteers has quietly helped many new mums, dads, grandparents and caregivers with advice, referrals and practical assistance.
This assistance includes items such as a layette for new babies (clothing, nappies, bedding), and the loan of prams, bassinets, high chairs, all free of charge and completely confidential.

Blog from Westley
In my last week in Bordeau training has been going well, concentrating on strength, speed and power, which is crucial for a strong pursuit. We have been doing double sessions to simulate race day in Beijing, which means waking at a set time, training, eating, etc...training has been very hard.
On Monday August 4, we had a trial day, which is a serious hit out, riding a 3km distance pursuit in a time of 3 mins flat, which is promising. We travel to Beijing on August 9, which means we miss the opening ceremony. There we will acclimatise to conditions in Beijing with race days fo rthe team pursuit on the 17th, with two rides and maybe a medal ride on the18th. That's about all for now, Thank you for your support.
Cheers, Westley
