Arthritis is a painful, degenerative joint disease that results from the additive effects of abnormal stresses placed on joints, causing inflammation and pain. Arthritis can result from early skeletal development problems with joints that suffer wear and tear over time. Also, arthritis can result from injury to joints. One in five dogs suffer from the pain and disability caused by arthritis, with the majority going undiagnosed and untreated, due to pet owners’ thinking arthritis is an 'old dog' problem. Arthritis can affect dogs of all sizes and breeds, although larger dogs such as Labradors, German Shepherds, Rottweillers and Border Collies are often more prone.

Newer medications, available from your veterinarian, have been developed for the treatment of arthritis in dogs, offering better safety than previously available. With pet owners’ help, veterinarians can properly diagnose arthritis and determine the proper medication for their dog. Not all medications are the same.
