Make no mistake about it, however you dress up the current Israel and Palestinian warfare, there is no 'right' or 'wrong' side to it. The actual warfare and the slaughter of the innocents, as terrible as it is , should be seen as a continuation of the ages old religious war which has raged in one form or another since the inception of Christianity all those two milenia ago
To try and fault either side on temporal grounds, in the Israel v Gaza exchange is simplistic and more than a little dishonest.
Within that dishonesty, we could say that because for at least eight years, Hamas has been raining rockets on Israel in a 'hit and run' type action, apparently in response to what amounts to a trade and supply blockade of Gaza by Israel. The blockade apparently being to control the weapons being smuggled into Gaza, so that Hamas can continue to rain rockets and let loose the 'suicide bombers'.
The rockets and suicide bombers are because of...........What came first, the chicken or the egg.......etc.
So, no matter how far back we go into the temporal exchanges and the causes of them, we cannot in all honesty subscribe a 'right' or 'wrong' to either side.
That conumdrum automatically takes us back to the historical religious wars of even the past milenium and a close and honest look at those would be very unlikely to give mainstream Christians a clean bill of health either...Sorry, but I need to mention the so-called
Christian 'Crusades" in the 'Holy Land', witch burnings in New England, the various 'inquisitions' The post Henry V111 see-sawing of religious rule between Roman Catholicism and the Protestant Christians, not to mention every subsequent full war or skirmish, where some 'clown' in authority,' yells "'For GOD, for King and for Country.....Charge!" The'God' bit being a bit presumptious....I mean, does the Christian God really want these violent, grubby little wars, which invariably slaughter the innocents, both phycologically and physically, while both sides call upon Him..Yes, the same HIM....to carry the day for them? Err, sorry, but I think not!
By the way, what religion was Adolph Hitler?.....Sorry about that...just my own nasty side letting me down a bit.
So what can we do about the current slaughter and all the slaughters which went before?
If we are guided by history, we could raise an army in the name of 'The Lord', get in there and blow the 'Bejeasus'
out of both sides of the scrimage, and if we can stomach further slaughter of the 'innocents' as 'colateral damage', we can 'impose' a lasting peace through fear of unspeakable violence.......You betcha' babe' ! OR We can stop making war in the name of'The Lord'
so that no matter what 'goodness' we might attempt as individuals or nations, is done in the name of humanity
That way, our relationship with our gods, whoever or whatever they might be is a private and non-compelled one. Certainly, the intended or even misguided evil we do, must never be in THEIR names!

OR, we can beat our swords
OR, we can beat our swords into plowshares and stop making war FULL STOP. That is, an entirely non-participatory stance toward wars of any kind.
