Dennis Pennefather-Local author
Some locals like the direct and cheeky style of Dennis Pennefather and others consider him somewhat of an upstart, be it standing for the mayoralty and council or 'At the throat' letters to editors.
Be you 'for' or 'agin' him, there is no denying that his works as a books author are fast being recognised.
His first two books, 'Constable' and 'Sergeant' are in the process of being combined into one volume to be titled, 'New Zealand Policeman' as the originals received excellent reviews.
The most recent of his works are: 'An Almost Understanding' (fiction) of which Graeme CASS for HB Today said;
"Leaves you with an after-burn you will want to share with a friend."
Dame Fiona KIDMAN (Current Creative NZ Writers' Fellowship holder) said,
"Certainly packs some punches and touches several new spots in the emotions"
Dennis" latest effort, 'The Understanding' was also hailed by Graeme CASS for HB Today, as:
"Clever sci-fi tale, a first-class effort" He favourably compairs it to Wyndham's 'Midwich Cuckoos' & Huxley's "Brave New World' Check out Limited Edition Books

CHB Mail's Simon Pearse
CHB Mail's Simon Pearse reviewed my Fantasy-fiction novel, 'The Understanding' and confirmed a lot of the positive reasons why I believe it to be something special in its genre. To some extent the 'special' qualities were also reflected in the review that Graeme Cass did for
'Hawke's Bay Today'. Simon was very critical of some of my sentences, which he said go on and on and also some gramatical errors, but from his positive comments "..even has the potential to become a cult classic, due to it's....." convince me that the story is as good as I always thought it was.
I must conceed that my style is perhaps 'over-wordy and one which had it's genesis in yesteryear.
Because of my belief in 'The Understanding' I have put my pride as a writer aside for a time, and have forwarded"The Understanding' to a professional editor, so that it may in fact achieve it's true potential, once it is re-issued,still with all of it's positive attributes, but in a more reader-friendly volume......Gosh! It would make such a great movie!
Well, one can dream eh?
