Extensive dissatisfaction with the current government has had much of the public predicting that it is time to change the government.
There have been quite a few causes for that dissatisfaction, such as the free-trade deal with China which has ,and will continue to cost jobs in this country.
The apparent degeneration of our policing and attempts to fix that simply by pumping-out more and more unworkable legislation, instead of re-aligning policing,also destroys voter confidence.
Even the insipient free-trade agreement with the United States, will cost this country something socially. The States does not believe in 'free lunches' therefore we will pay dearly for it, that is for sure.
We can call it 'free-trade' for now, but that is simply because we do not as yet know the exact nature of the 'currency' we will need to use to make our 'purchase'.

Feline AIDs - October is FIV Awareness Month

In 1987 a feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), was discovered in cats that were suffering from chronic ill health. Recently we have seen a spate of infected cats in our area and the prevalence of this disease seems to be increasing. The FIV virus attacks the cat’s immune system leaving the animal more susceptible to other diseases eg. mouth ulcers, diarrhoea, weight loss. Spread of this disease is mainly through the introduction of saliva by biting, so free range, fighting cats infected with the virus are the main source of infection. There is no specific treatment for FIV and eventually the cat develops Feline AIDs. Infected cats are a danger to other cats and contact should be prevented as much as possible.

E-Day an Enormous Success

The CHB District Council's electronic waste clean-up day was successful beyond wildest expectations. Throughout the day a steady stream of locals arrived at the Railway Station collection point and disencumbered themselves of obsolete and inoperable computers, monitors and printers. When the collection closed at 3pm the organisers had a freight container full!

Collection assistants were in high spirits - an excellent opportunity to meet locals and to salvage a few iconic machines for private collections.

The council is to be commended for this action otherwise much of this waste might have found its way into landfills with the consequential effect of putting toxic chemicals and elements into our soil.

THE WOOLSHED - what every ratepayer should know !

CHBDC Mayor, Trish Gidden's idea district and regonal councils should combine to purchase the Aromoana Woolshed, was an opportunity not to be missed, she said , "the building had an independant valuation of more than $700'000 , had been renovated at a cost of $180,000 but was now on offer for $300,000 if the puchase went ahead it would be leased to a Neil McHardy educational trust for the next 30 years for $1 per year as they became responsible for all costs during that time. It would become an education centre as part of a regional marine reserve. A base for DOC and the Regional council, Search and Rescue, Rural fire service and other community services. Attracting, we thought unbelieveable numbers of school and college pupils and university students who would be bussed out to the building, suplimented by other visitors, paying a gold coin donation to the trust, expected to cover their expenditure.'

The Old Church - a restaurant review

On the few occasions we dine out these days we are usually content to avail ourselves of fare locally offered. On Saturday evening, however, a dear friend insisted on taking us 'out to tea' at a restaurant located in Meanee Road near Taradale.

We arrived at The Old Church at dusk. I thought we had been taken to a fairyland; this superb old Catholic church was beautifully lit achieving a fine balance between the exterior lighting and what we could see of the interior showing through the stained glass windows. To one side rows of vines were draped generously with strings of miniature lamps adding to the magic illusion.
