Following a successful appeal through CHB Mail a few weeks ago, all of the previously used flower baskets have been located and have now been planted up in readiness for hanging in time for next month’s Waipawa Spring Festival (Duck Day). The High Street retailers and the Lions Club have come up with the necessary financial contributions to cover the cost of basket liners, compost and flowers for this community project. The Lions Club wishes to acknowledge the extremely generous support given by Bruce Nelson of Mitre 10 of Waipukurau who has supplied basket liners, compost and flower seedlings at very favourable prices. A working bee attracted 15 Lions Club members and several other interested Waipawa residents and a total of 63 baskets, each containing a mixture of red, white and blue summer flowers, have been planted up. The baskets are now safely in a Shade House for protection and regular watering to enable the flowers to grow stronger and bigger before the baskets are hung in the High Street. The Waipawa & District Lions Club meets on the first and third Thursdays of every month at Waipawa Fire Station Hall in Waverley Street, Waipawa at 6.30 pm. Lions clubs are a group of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs. These projects included the participating in organising the 2013 Waipawa Spring Festival (Duck Day), helping Takapau Lions with Bookarama in Waipukurau, and Sale of Christmas Trees, Firewood and Mushroom Compost. Funds raised from these projects have enabled the Club to make donations and support to Girl Guides, CHB College Shooting Club, Waipukurau Pakeke Club and Camp Quality for Children with Cancer and also other charities. In addition the Club has presented local Youth Service Awards and helped with numerous charity collections, donated firewood to needy local residents and support for 2 young people to attend an Outward Bound leadership course.

The Waipawa & District Lions Club meets on the first and third Thursdays of every month at Waipawa Fire Station Hall in Waverley Street, Waipawa at 6.30 pm. The Mushroom Compost has been kindly donated by Te Mata Mushrooms of Havelock North and generously transported for the Lions Club by Stephenson Transport Ltd of Waipawa. The compost is superb for improving vegetable and flower gardens. The compost has been packed into bags by a group of Central Hawkes Bay College students as a fund-raiser for their school Shooting Club. Lions Club members are delivering the bags to buyers in the Otane/Waipawa/ Waipukurau area over the next few weeks and still have a number bags available at $5.00 per bag.
